Cultural Safety in Osteopathic Practice in Aotearoa New Zealand

Cultural Safety in Osteopathic Practice in Aotearoa New Zealand: A Sequential Mixed-Methods Study.

The purpose of this study is to understand how culturally safe and appropriate care is understood and provided within osteopathic practice in Aotearoa New Zealand. The research aims to;

  • Describe osteopaths’ understandings, confidence, and self-reported practices related to cultural safety;

  • Identify barriers and enablers to providing culturally safe osteopathic care; and

  • Explore experiences of care to understand what supports culturally safe practice, including from Māori perspectives.

Cultural safety is increasingly recognised as central to achieving equitable health outcomes, yet limited profession-specific evidence exists within osteopathy in Aotearoa New Zealand. This study seeks to address this gap and inform education, professional development, and practice improvement initiatives.

This study is open to registered osteopaths practising in Aotearoa New Zealand. The qualitative phase may also include patients or community members recruited through appropriate, culturally safe pathways.  The project is a stand-alone study but forms part of a broader programme of research focused on strengthening culturally safe and equitable osteopathic practice.

This study has been approved by the WINTEC Human Ethics Research Committee (Approval reference: WTLR05110326).
